Nationalist and populist tendencies are gaining weight across the European Union – not least in Central Europe. Thus, we have invited experts from Slovakia, Slovenia, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Austria to discuss current developments and the impact the political debate has on EU-public opinion in their respective countries.
The debate at the Vienna House in Brussels marked the final event of our project “Anti EU-rhetoric versus own national interests? National populism and its reception in Central Europe” which was co-funded by the Europe for Citizens Programme of the European Union.

In the run-up to the event the project partners published a joint policy brief which summarises the main results of the surveys, provides an insight in the “state of play” of the respective EU debate and draws conclusions on what should be done to escape the populist nationalistic dead end.
The event gathered 108 participants including the general public, decision makers, representatives of NGOs, media, stakeholders and more.
