What to expect from Austria’s election (Paul Schmidt, EUROPP Blog, London School of Economics and Political Science)

Austria will hold a parliamentary election on 29 September. The election was called following the collapse of the governing coalition between the Austrian People’s Party (ÖVP) and the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ). Paul Schmidt previews the vote, explaining that awareness of the interlinkages between domestic and European politics and a relative rise in political interest will be two important factors in the campaign.

Let’s talk about Europe! Political discussion during the EP 2019 election campaign

Voter turnout in the 2019 European Parliament election increased substantially over 2014 (+8%). These facts alone say nothing about whether citizens actually engaged with Europe in the run-up to election day. To shed light on this important aspect of citizen-level engagement this policy brief analyses the frequency and content of European topics in citizens’ political discussion.
